install node on windows subsystem for linux / ubuntu

The guide referenced in the source section is useful.

I'll explain each line....

Ensure you have a ~/.bashrc, as the following script depends on it existing.

$ touch ~/.bashrc

Download and execute the script listed here. (The full content of the script is provided further down, for inspection....)

$ curl -o- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/creationix/nvm/v0.33.6/install.sh | bash

All going well, that will have put nvm - the node version manager - on your system.

To use it you need to restart bash...

// restart bash

Now use nvm to install node....

$ nvm install node

Result was something like this:

$ nvm install node
Downloading and installing node v10.8.0...
Downloading https://nodejs.org/dist/v10.8.0/node-v10.8.0-linux-x64.tar.xz...
######################################################################## 100.0%
Computing checksum with sha256sum
Checksums matched!
Now using node v10.8.0 (npm v6.2.0)
Creating default alias: default -> node (-> v10.8.0)

Here's the full content of the script from https://raw.githubusercontent.com/creationix/nvm/v0.33.6/install.sh

#!/usr/bin/env bash

{ # this ensures the entire script is downloaded #
